Expression

The Strategic Network

UDL Principle: Provide Multiple Means of Expression (The How of Learning)

Students need to be able to share what they have learned with others; with other students, with teachers, on formative assessments, and on summative assessments. The strategic network of the brain is a primary area where we organize and express our ideas, where we plan and perform tasks. Since all students are different, some struggle with managing time, setting goals and priorities, expressing what they know. Because of this, students need options or choices in how they set goals, share what they have learned, monitor progress, and problem solve.

Ways to provide flexibility in expression include:

  • Options for physical action.
  • Options for expressive skills/fluency.
  • Options for executive functions (planning/monitoring).

Examples of flexibility in expression include:

  • Give students choices in how they share what they have learned (e.g. producing a report in essay format, a PowerPoint format, an audio format, a movie, a play, a series of photos).
  • Provide graphic organizers, rubrics, checklists, guides for notetaking, and other tools to help students organize information.
  • Provide tools and supports for time management, setting goals and priorities, progress monitoring task completion.
  • Provide planning templates for developing science projects, doing cooperative learning activities.
