The Florida Standards, Access Points, and Essential Understandings
The Florida Standards for Literacy address more than basic reading skills. As the grade levels progress there is an increased attention to text complexity. All students must be able to comprehend texts of increasing complexity to prepare them for post secondary settings.
Understanding the requirements of the Standards is an important starting point. In some cases, students who struggle with reading in middle and high school settings are provided additional instruction in reading that isn't aligned with the literacy standards for those grade levels. This can result in a misalignment between the instruction and what is assessed on the Florida Standards Assessment. All reading instruction, remediation, and interventions must be aligned with the grade level standards.
When looking at the Standards it is helpful to see them along with the Access Points and the related Essential Understandings. All of this information together provides options for flexibility and variation in the design of instructional activities to meet the needs of all students. For your implementation activity, pick two grade level standards for your target student, or group of students, to work on. You can use the documents below which include the Standards, Access Points, and Essential Understandings or you can use the CPALMS website.
