Module Overview

Adventures in Reading: Supporting Reading Comprehension

 

This tutorial is part of a series of on-line modules with a focus on classroom implementation. Each module is designed to be completed within one or two hours, with a follow-up activity involving one or more of your students. The follow-up activity document can be found here. Go ahead and download this document so you can be filling it out as you progress through this module.

For this module you will need the activity document noted above. To complete this document you will need the following information:

  • Identify a student or group of students that you will be working with on reading comprehension.
  • A brief description of your student's reading comprehension skills and an area that needs improvement.
  • Identify the standards your student will work on.
  • Identify any tools your student will use to support basic reading decoding skills. Students have a difficult time working on comprehending complex text when they are struggling with decoding.
  • Identify the strategies your student will use to build reading comprehension.
  • A brief description of the changes you want to see due to the use of the tools and strategies.
  • Identify the data/evidence you will collect to determine if the changes occurred.
  • If appropriate, a description of how you can use these tools and strategies with your whole class.
  • A brief description of how you will share your results with your peers.

 

Module Objectives - Participants will:

  1. Identify one or more tools that students can use to support reading.
  2. Identify one or more strategies that students can use to support comprehension.
