Closing the Performance Gap

Problem Solving to Reduce the Performance Gap for Students with Disabilities

Welcome! This online module will guide you through a problem solving activity designed to help reduce ther performance gap for students with disabilities. During this activity you will review the following strategies:

This problem solving activity will focus on Key Practices 4 and 5 of "What Matters Most - Moving Your Numbers (http://movingyournumbers.org/what-matters-most). You can download the PDF of all of the Key Practices here (79318-key-practices-guide.pdf) but we will focus on Practices 4 and 5 which are included in the activity handouts below.

Activity Instructions

You will need three handouts. These are in WORD format so you can fill them out on your computer or you can print them and fill them out by hand.

Activity 1 - Using the What Matters Most 4 and 5 handout, look at each indicator and write a simple activity that you think would support that indicator. There is an example on the handout to help you get started. These do not have to be activities you are currently doing; they are just simple activities that you think could support that indicator.

Activity 2 - Using the Strategies to Reduce the Performance Gap handout, go through each of the sections of this module and write down a hypothesis problem statement that could be contributing the the performance gap for students with disabilities. There are slides in each section and there are example problem statements included in each slide presentation. You can use one of those or you can create your own problem statement. Once you have completed writing a problem statement for each of the sections below, rank order them based on which you feel need to be addressed first.

Activity 3 - using the Key Practices and Focus Strategy handout, write the strategy you decided is the most important and then pick three Key Practices from Activity 1 to focus on. There are examples on the handout.

That completes this module! You should now have some ideas on strategies and activities you can do in your district or school to start to reduce the performance gap for students with disabilities.
